CTS 1: The Digital Portfolio

Given the choice of four different essay topic titles. The one that really excited me was 'How visual qualities correspond to meaning in' a selected piece of work or film. I enjoy studying the many features within work and delving deep into the many aspects of each visual portrayal. Within my studies I have always been fascinated by surrealism and symbolism in traditional art pieces by artists like Salvador Dali, Audrey Flack and specifically Rene Magritte; I have always enjoyed discovering the meaning within each visual representation. It feels like piecing together a puzzle and adds curiosity to the art and a really key intellectual quality to work beyond the physical creation.

I really wanted to jump at the opportunity to discuss one of my main fascinations and interests, and could see this potential with the 'Style' question.

The first thing I did to kick start my research was delivered into the many books I already have at home based on the subject matter. From these I was able to gather inspiration and narrow down my selection by choosing a specific surrealistic artist. After further online research, I was able to pin-point my area of study further by finding a specific art piece related to the artist I felt most interesting to talk about. This was when I came across the traditional oil painting Personal Values by Rene Magritte.

What drew me to this piece were the main visual forms within its composition and its class and quality, which I knew would unlock plentiful discussion.
