Screen print part A
26th September
I participated in a slightly earlier screen print induction which was with a foundation group. I used this opportunity to get stuck in with my project but also to get to know a diverse range of people from other courses was inspiring. Getting use to the workshop space and materials was interesting as I went into this workshop with no prior screen print experience.
Intro to the library facilities
3rd October
I got lead round with an animation MA group by two library staff members. Within the space of 30 minutes we were introduced to the entire space. This included walk throughs of the learning zone, group study and training rooms, the silent study area and silent zone. Within these areas staff spoke of the facilities offered including the reference books, where to find course specific books by aisle and where to take out laptops to borrow. I found this a very useful introduction preparing me for my studies.
Intaglio
10th October
I joined the MA IVM group for this induction which I saw as an opportunity to make broader connections with others at LCC within these crucial early stages of the course.
I began with Lino printing: I used a variety of carving tools to take out parts of the Linoleum slab. We were able to use our own photographs to make quick textural indentations for our print base.
Print Production
Once designs were completed we were shown how to ink up our linoleum and how to use the press machines correctly. Using black ink I was able to produce a monochromatic print from my relief base.
Collaborative Print
The final stage involved piecing together everyones linoleum bases onto the press to create one large print. It was interesting to see everyones designs collectively on one large piece of paper. It meant that you could see areas of small indentation and large and where the ink had really taken hold well on the print.
Relief Dry Point Etching
Relief Methods
Before starting the etch piece our technician discussed the different relief methods that could be produced on a medium which I found really useful.
Etch Experimentation
Once were were shown the different tools we could use to make an imprint we were given a small piece of card in which to experiment with. I chose to create a textural building style etch using all the tools in order to portray the many rough textures of the brick work.
Screen print part B
4th November
I found the part A induction to be very insightful therefore I was optimistic for the second stage to this induction process.
We were talked through the process on physically setting up the screen for our own designs.
Photography Induction
13th January
this induction was useful as we were shown all the major rooms around the department. We were told what they were used for; for example there were both small and large rooms with backdrops suitable for different sized objects your wanting to photograph. We were told with a few rooms you were able to come in on the day to reserve a time slot and enquire about set up etc. Other rooms are bookable via the Orb. This experience gave me a better understanding of where I can go to capture excellent photographic pieces for my work.
